FAIRTRADE: MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE

Introduction

Millions of farmers and producers depend on selling their crops and products to survive. But it is a risky business – when prices drop it can spell disaster. If they earn less than it costs to produce their goods, they face real hardship – struggling to buy food or keep their children in school. Ultimately they may lose their business and their livelihood.

Fair trade seeks to transform the lives of disadvantaged producers in the developing world by enabling them to use their skills and resources to trade their way out of poverty.

It aims to challenge injustices in trading structures and practices that so often lead to exploitation and marginalisation of those in the developing world.

Fair trade creates opportunities for poor producers and guarantees:

+ fair trading practices both in terms of payment and price

+ extra income for community development

+ equitable and safe working conditions

+ a greater respect for the environment

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

+ regularly purchase as many items carrying the Fairtrade logo as possible

+ ask for Fairtrade products to be served in your workplace, school, club

+ look for the Fairtrade mark on cotton clothes

+ encourage your friends and family to follow your example.
